Designing the Perfect Back Yard for Your Home

Designing the Perfect Back Yard for Your Home

Everyone dreams of a nice back yard to relax and play in. A place where you can have family gatherings or just a safe area for your children to play in is a common desire for many people in North America. With all of the Do It Yourself (DIY) programs out there, our imaginations have been piqued and the perfect back yard experience seems within our grasp. However, there are so many choices for what to include in back yard, how do you decide what you want to include? This post will give you some of the most popular options from our favorite back yards.

Every back yard needs a BBQ. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive, but if you are serious about having a back yard everything conversation starts and ends with a BBQ. If you are planning on having any sort of large family or friend gatherings, make sure that you get a BBQ that can handle it. Spending a few extra dollars on a larger one can save you time and stress when you have 20 people show up for an impromptu feast.

Water Features

When most people think of a tranquil and relaxing back yard the first thing they think about is a water feature. This could mean many different things like a pond, stream or water fountain. You can purchase a kit or complete feature that you can install on your own or even do a custom layout with fish, plants and other accessories. The sky is the limit and often so is your budget. Installing a water feature can be pricy, but it doesn’t have to be. Do your research before going down this path.

Built-in Beverage Cooler

A lot of people don’t think about this when they design their back yard, but a built-in beverage cooler is a very nice feature to include. There are a lot of options available for this. You can build a nice permanent wooden box that holds a standard ice chest or install an outdoor beverage cooler. I prefer the stainless steel Corona ice chest. It looks good and keeps your beverages cold all day. Ice chests come in many different makes and models that can fit into any area in your yard.

If you are thinking about getting a beverage fridge for your patio, make sure you talk to your electrician and set it up properly and that you have purchased one that is suitable for outdoor use. If it isn’t, it likely won’t last very long.

Tree House

If you have kids you may want to consider building a tree house. Nowadays you don’t even have to build it yourself. There are many places where you can order a kit or pre-built structure that you can plop down and start using immediately. You can spend a few hundred dollars on a small one to many thousands for a large climbing area. To save money you can also build one yourself. They aren’t too difficult and you can design it to yours and your child’s wishes.

Fire Pit

A fire pit is a great place to relax by or gather around with family and friends. You can just sit back and relax or roast wieners or marshmallows. There are a lot of options here from simple DIY brick pits to fancy standing fire pits that you can purchase at your local hardware store. Get some comfy lounge chairs and you have the perfect place to spend an evening.

Final Thoughts

This is just a small sampling of the options for your yard. If you want to improve your back yard, do your research to see what you like and don’t like. Keep a list of your favorites and then create a budget and a plan on how to implement them. There are many professionals out there who would be happy to look at your plan and help you execute it. Designing a back yard doesn’t have to be expensive. With a bit of hard work and planning you can make huge improvements for a small investment. If you do have the budget, you can do some incredible things and wow your family and friends.
