I’ve lived in a couple different neighborhoods in the Atlanta GA area – some a little better than others in terms of upkeep and value. Nothing gives mind more calmness than an early morning run around the subdivision, therefore I would spend most mornings running and observing the different landscaping of homes nearby. In some areas I would notice well kept lawns with beautifully designed gardens and shrubs. In others, there were grilled doors, iron bars, tightly guarding the window, overgrown lawns with tall grass, chained gates with fences and the occasional “beware of bad dog.”
One can understand the reasoning behind the security measures like the iron bars, but I sometimes wonder what other eco friendly means could be used to enhance security and at the sometime make the place look much better.
I recently came across a few surprising home and invasion & Burglary Statistics. According to a SafeWise Report:
- 60 percent of burglars used forcible entry to gain access to a home.
- 30 percent entered home through an unlocked door.
- Most burglars try to determine if a house has an alarm system before attempting a home invasion.
- 33 percent of intruders enter a home through the front door.
- Burglaries occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
It’s clear to that most burglaries happen very fast, there are not properly organized and are most rookies.
Take these measures to lower your risk of a break in.
CUT DOWN AND TRIM BUSHES AND HEDGES
It’s a no brainer, but this lightens up the space, increase visibility and criminals will think twice before entering. Cut the hedges 3.5 feet or less. Thieves will are attracted to anything taller. You will be able to see what’s going on outside the home, plus your neighbors and other law abiding citizens will also have a clear view as to what’s going on. The theft loves the high hedges because they can conceal themselves from the public.
ADD GRAVEL ON THE GROUND CLOSE TO YOUR WINDOW
A crook does not like noise when they are performing their evil deeds. The crunching sound of the gravel beneath their feet will turn them away
PLANT THORNY ROSES UNDERNEATH YOUR WINDOWS
Thorny plants like roses with also help to deter them. You can also use other plants like Bougainvillea and barberrie.
